With Engage Lanka travel experience we offer you the rewarding opportunity to get engaged in community service by teaching the needy, while experiencing the beautiful isle of Sri Lanka and it's mainstream religion to the utmost.

Volunteer Opportunities

Engage Lanka currently has volunteer opportunities available through our partner organization Mahapola Bhikkhu Education Institute (MBEI). The Sri Lankan government through the Mahapola Scholarship Fund funds the MBEI, situated in Peradeniya, near Kandy. The institute provides English, Computer and various other courses to novice monks selected through a rigorous screening process. Volunteers will be directly involved in teaching the monks in the courses provided by the MBEI. If you have any specialist skills, these too can be imparted to the novice monks, and will be much appreciated by all those involved.

Learn Buddhism & Meditation

Through the MBEI and Gatambe temple, volunteers will get the opportunity to practice meditation under expert and world-renowned meditation masters. If you so wish, you will be given the opportunity to further your understanding of Buddhism or simply be able to explore it’s teachings with the most knowledgeable exponents of the philosophy in the world.

Travel and explore

Take a break from philosophy and religion on the warm sandy beaches of the south coastal line. With spectacular views, the long stretches of clear shoreline will enthrall the most seasoned beachgoer. Engage Lanka gives you an opportunity to dive, surf and snorkel around the island in some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Your experience will take you through tree lined roads and bustling streets, exposing the diversity of Sri Lanka in development and natural beauty. Roadside fruit stalls invite you to ample fresh produce, and friendly locals can guide you to places of interest. The many bubbling streams and waterfalls of the country can soothe the weary traveler. For the wildlife enthusiast, there are animal sanctuaries all over the island including the world-famous Pinnawala elephant orphanage.

Sri Lanka’s rich history can be explored through its well preserved ancient cities dating back to the 6th century BC. You will be amazed at the ancient world’s tallest brick structures in Anuradhapura and the breath taking water gardens of Sigiriya. The unknown marvel of ancient engineering awaits you in the northern parts of Sri Lanka.

In the heartland of the country you can saunter the mystic mountains with ample opportunity for more serious bushwalking. The serenity of Nuwara Eliya calms those who visit, an experience enriching mind, body and spirit. With breathtaking views overlooking lush tropical forests and scenic open plains, you will understand why Sri Lanka is the Emerald Isle.

Costs

The amount of money spent in Sri Lanka depends on the individual. A typical student traveler can expect to spend AUS$750 for a month in expenses (including accommodation, food, transport and fees). If you travel in a group such expenses as accommodation and transport could be shared reducing the budget further. We encourage you to travel in small groups of 2 to 10 people. Best of all, costs will be a bear minimum, as Engage Lanka exist only as a service organization on the not-for-profit basis

Programme Dates

This is customizable though the main time periods are July and the Australian summer period. The length of stay is also up to the individual and can vary from 10 days to a month or even longer.
